How do you come up with your innovative designs?

I am a pediatric Occupational Therapist with over 20 years of experience and the co-owner of Sommerfly™. As an Occupational Therapist, adapting toys, clothing, furniture and other things to make life more accessible and functional for my clients has been part of what I was trained to do and have done for my clients all these years. I have designed all of Sommerfly’s products as a response to my client’s needs. I was encouraged by many of the parents I have worked with to make my designs more widely available because of their effectiveness with their children.

Why use PET pellets?

We use PET pellets because they are free of BPA, Phthalate and lead. I keep pellets near my sewing machine when I am designing new products and my nieces love to sink their hands into the pellets to experience their smooth and soothing feel. We have used these pellets for years in our products and have had only excellent results with durability and safety.

Why sew the pellets into a “bean bag” prior to inserting them into the Products? Doesn’t that add expense?

Highest quality construction is our goal. We know that therapeutic products are not inexpensive and are expected to last a very long time. By inserting the pellets into a fabric bag and then into the products they are double protected against coming out of the product. This ‘pocketed construction’ technique also keeps them evenly distributed in their chambers, providing better coverage over the user. This extra detail is a value added to our products by providing lasting comfort and durability.

Why top stitch all the edges on the Sleep Tight blankets, Sit Tight lap pads, and Relaxer weighted products?

We know first hand how robustly therapeutic products can be used. We have taken this extra measure to ensure added durability. The double stitching adds durability and a pleasant look that is also appealing to the eye.

Why offer both Corduroy and Cotton fabric prints for your Covers and only Corduroy for your core product fabric?

We selected 100% cotton Corduroy for our core product fabric as it is soft and durable–a necessity when washing and loving your products over time. Patterns and designs are fun but they often are distracting or even upsetting for someone who has Autism, Sensory Processing Dysfunction or Stress. A main goal of weighted products is to soothe and calm. Some fabric designs cause the opposite effects and counteract the intention of weighted products. The corduroy colors that we offer have been selected to minimize distraction and stimulation. To meet the needs and desires of many of our customers who don’t have Autism or Sensory Processing Dysfunction we will be offering an expanding variety of pattern fabric covers.
